What's So Great About Teaching?

For 20+ years I worked in the community as a helping professional. Along the way I had encounters with others in a similar capacity...some were really good at what they did, others - not so much. I had the benefit of some excellent mentors along my professional journey in Social Work. I also attempted to be a mentor to new professionals encountered in my work. When the opportunity became available for me to teach others, I grabbed at the chance, hoping I could reach more people in a shorter amount of time, and especially hoping I would be able to ensure a good foundation of knowledge before the social work students ever got out into the field.

Teaching is a two way street most of the time. While it is my role and responsibility to impart information and knowledge to others, I always learn something new in the process or perceive a situation with new insight. For me, that is a win-win reality.

I like your "teaching is a two-way street" comment. Some of the most exciting moments in class for me as a teacher and a student have been those when we shared in the creation of new insight. Gives me chill bumps to think about it!

You'll find that both teaching AND learning are two-way streets but i think that's what you were intending to say anyway. We'll talk about this a great deal in the iTeach seminar :)
